A leveraged buyout (LBO) is a financial strategy often employed in mergers and acquisitions where a significant portion of the acquisition cost is funded through borrowing. In an LBO, a buying entity, often a private equity firm or a group of investors, uses a combination of equity and borrowed funds (leverage) to acquire a target company. The assets of the target company being acquired are often used as collateral for the borrowed funds.
